Design Dilemma: A Historic Kitchen, Part 1

If you’ve ever wanted to renovate a room in your home but had a limited budget, we can relate! With so many renovations options and styles to choose from, it can be an overwhelming process that gets expensive fast.  One of the most popular renovation rooms is the kitchen, which is why we asked our experts, Andrea from Keeping It Cozy and Sara from Embrace My Space, to weigh in with design advice for Micki.

Micki blogs at Confessions of an ADD Housewife, and needed some ideas on how to update the kitchen in her well-loved historic home. Check out what Micki’s currently working with below.

The Challenge

There are a few design challenges to Micki’s family kitchen, including the restrictions that come with living in a history district. While they would absolutely consider changing the windows, they are limited to their options on design and use, as they can’t change the window height.

In addition, their stove is stuck in place behind their ‘big gray wall’ – so moving it or redesigning with it is not an option. The ADD Housewife family is stuck with the space they have for storage due to the stove as well. While they can get creative, there’s no way to build a pantry or closet to house their food and utensils, which is why they are currently using all the temporary shelving pictured above.

A few other limits for our designers include the size of the room and the floor plan. Designing around a light source can be difficult, but we think Sara and Andrea are up to the challenge!

Last but not least, Micki’s slightly overwhelmed with all the design options available. She’s not tied to ‘modern’ or ‘traditional’, but she wants a functional, gorgeous space that works for her family – and includes some color, one of her few requests. Speaking of, here’s what Micki and her husband do and don’t want.

Requests

Micki and her husband have no plans to change the kitchen sink, as it’s a vintage sink…porcelain covered cast iron. They’re hoping to get a new faucet soon (note: we can help with that Micki!), because Micki’s husband recently broke the sprayer and the faucet doesn’t move to the right. They’re looking to give the whole room a facelift…once we can give them a solid, beautiful plan. Micki loves bright, bold colors, so our designers will try to work a pop of color into the room as well.

Come back tomorrow to see the pros weigh in on what looks they’d like to see in this historic home.
