Kitchen Solutions: A Kitchen Redesign With Kids in Mind

Cooking as a family is a great way to bond and teach valuable nutrition skills as well as being really fun. If you’re considering a family-friendly kitchen remodel, here’s some ideas to make it easy-to-use, yet safe, for the little helpers at home.

  • Go for comfort. Counter-tops are designed for adults making them too high for many
children to work on. Instead of requiring them to elevate by standing on a stool, bring the
workspace to them. Design a portion of your countertop to be lower than the standard
    36” height.
  • Provide your little helper with a storage space in the kitchen to keep their own set of
cooking tools. The Growing Cooks Kid’s Utensil set contains a rubber spatula, wooden
spoon, and wire whisk for kids to feel at ease as they learn how to prepare food for the
    first time.
  • Avoid sharp corners and surfaces that are not easily damaged or stained and easy to clean.
Tile countertops can be beautiful but you don’t want to spend all your time cleaning
grout. Laminate or Formica countertops are much easier to clean and durable.
  • Keep the kid-friendly workspace away from appliances, especially the stove. Safety should
always be top of mind when considering the layout of your family kitchen.
Finally, if you decide to design a kid-friendly kitchen, make sure you designate a couple of
nights a week as “family cooking night.” The experience will last a lifetime.
