New decades seem to spark new ideas, but also allow us to see the cyclical nature of home design trends. Here’s what we’ll be seeing more of and what we’ll be seeing again, but in new forms and with fresh eyes. There’s something for every budget to make you feel great about ringing in 2020, right at home.
1. Textures
Textures are coming back in a big way in rugs, furniture fabrics and wall hangings. But this isn’t your mama’s macramé. Organic, yes. Complicated, no.
Deep pile that you can sink your toes into and wall art that makes simple shapes feel warm and welcoming are the long-term winners.
The best combination? Sleek fixtures like the Tenet bathroom faucet juxtaposed with nubby, colorful accent pieces.
2. Home Offices
Another trend on the upswing is home offices.
Heard that one before?
This is a little different, with incorporating desks and work areas into your main living space more seamlessly. Working remotely and flex schedules are only increasing, while our trend toward making the most of smaller square footage is doing the same.
3. Space Saving Furniture
Moveable tables and comfy chairs with ottomans are proving to be great places to settle in and get things done without taking over the whole room. A pair of noise-reducing earphones means being able to keep an eye out for kiddo chaos while still sitting in on that conference call.
4. Repurposing
Repurposing is already big and isn’t going anywhere, thanks to numerous design shows and our greater awareness of cutting down on wasteful habits. Even though it seems as if consignment store prices are going up accordingly, you can still get great finds to fix up at garage and estate sales, or online auction sites.
5. Color
Which, of course, brings us to color. Mustard/marigold yellow is hot now, but it’s also got staying power.
Why?
Because it’s a good year-round color for a room or an accent wall that pairs well with the gold fixtures that are also here to stay. Plus, it’s one of those colors that can go sophisticated or playful, depending on how you use it.
6. Indoor Greenery
A trend that’s not only staying – but improving – is indoor greenery. Vertical gardens and succulents are making it easy for people in every climate to keep plant life growing year-round.
For those of you who swear that you don’t have a green thumb, Spanish Moss and “air plants” in hanging bulbs are super-easy and super-cool.
Put them near a classic chrome faucet for a mix-n-match style.
