10 Tips for Men to Better Care for their Faces
The Pfister’s Whiskers team is busy putting their follicles to work growing some beautiful face furniture, so we thought now was as good a time as any to share some great care tips for men to use while standing at the sink every morning. Whether raising a beard, tending a mustache, or keeping things squeaky clean, we think all men can benefit from these tips.
Have a tip of your own? We’d love to see it in the comments below!
Pfirst things First
1. Prep your face
- According to the American Academy of Dermatology the best time to shave is after a shower. This is when your skin is warm and moist and your beard is free of excess oil and dead skin cells that can clog up your razor. Also, apply a shave cream, gel, or oil to help that razor glide smoothly across your skin.
2. Prep your tools
- Just like your face, your tools should be warm too. So pop that Push and Seal drain down, fill the sink with warm water, and warm up that razor blade. Warm tools tend to irritate the skin less than cold. Don’t forget to rinse your razor in warm water too, no sense in letting it get cold!
3. Shave directionally
- Do you know what direction your facial hair grows in? Did you even have a clue that it grows in a direction? Mapping your beard growth lets you know what direction to shave in. Generally, for the closest, most comfortable shave, a three pass technique is use. Once with the grain, once across the grain, and once against the grain. Each mans beard grows differently, so take some time to learn yours.
4. Post Shave Routines
- Take care of your skin AFTER your shave too, don’t just leave it to dry and hope you’ll be OK. Post shave balms, splashes, salves, or lotions can help to rehydrate your skin after you’ve just wreaked havoc on it with a razor and soap.
Maintenance is Key
5. Wash Regularly
- We mean your face of course. Keeping your face clean, and your beard free from trapped food and skin cells will do wonders for the health of your skin and facial hair. So, take a minute every day and wash up!
6. Oil Up
- Invest in a quality beard oil to keep your facial hair tamed. The oils keep your beard manageable, hydrated, and is good for the skin under the beard too.
7. Give it a Trim
- Part of the maintenance plan is keeping your beard or moustache in fine form with a quick trim. So, invest in a quality trimmer, master your beard shape, and keep things tidy. You’ll appreciate the way your beard looks and feels, and the world will appreciate that you haven’t gone full Castaway.

8. Be Patient
- If you’re walking around cleanshaven every day, this tip might not be for you, but if you’re raising a beard, patience is a virtue. Every beard grows at a different rate, but generally it takes 4-6 weeks to truly know what you’re working with. So, suck it up buttercup and live with the itch for a while, because your beard or moustache is going to be glorious.
9. Train your Beard
- Part of trimming your beard is training your beard. Give your beard a regular brushing in the direction that you want it to grow. If you want to get fancy you can even apply styling products to really define the shape. Beard balm anyone?
10. Fuel the Fire
- Finally, head from the bathroom to the kitchen. Like most of our body, the beard is made in the kitchen. Fuel your beard with healthy proteins and fats, and use that Pfister Kitchen Faucet to wash off your daily servings of leafy greens.
Is the above too much maintenance for you? You could always just see your barber and leave your face in the hands of the professionals. Going once per week will keep your face in tip-top shape.
