Mid Century Modern Style and Today’s Shopping

The “modern comeback” that started in the 1990’s and is still with us doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

There’s good reason for that. Some design purists say that the “mid-century movement” was really only from 1947-57. But from the early thirties all the way through the mid-sixties was a time rich with experimental architecture, art and furniture.

That yields a lot of pieces, and just as much variety. Ultra-minimalist, fancifully fabulous and some just plain weird furniture was created. These (never-going-out-of) styles have a few things in common, though. And they can help you decide how to shop and what to pay for pieces today.

Mid Century Modern Furniture

By now, we’re all familiar with names like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Herman Miller, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. But do you need those names to enjoy your daily experience?

That’s wholly up to you.

Mid century modern furnishings are statement pieces, almost universally designed to look good from all angles.

Which means a couple of great things:

  • You don’t need a whole houseful of modern to make an impact.
  • You’ll likely be able to re-arrange your selected purchases to incorporate new additions or change up your living space.

Here’s another bonus:

Homes were smaller back when the originals of these designs were produced. And now, homes are trending smaller again. So if you’re an urban dweller or living in a high-cost area, chances are your bedroom(s) aren’t made to fit a King sized bed or a massive dresser anyway. Not if you plan on actually walking around the bed.

This period of design makes the most of space, and storage. Its clean lines necessitate smart interior shelving, and many pieces even have features like sliding leaves or drop-down doors. Finding a nicely preserved bedroom set to fit a smaller room isn’t so hard when most of the inventory consists of full-sized bed frames and similarly proportioned accessory pieces.

And, modern “then” plays well with modern “today,” if you use your wallet wisely.

Quality fixtures echo the lines of your furniture and tie a room together.

Start with faucets and lighting (the more permanent things) that make you feel good and add slowly from there.

Maybe both!

Manufacturers like Drexel, Lane and Heywood-Wakefield made large quantities of neat pieces that are find-able and affordable. They’re still “known names,” so they have good resale value, but you won’t find yourself tiptoeing around your own house.

Last and Certainly Not Least

Don’t forget about Mid Century Modern Art.
