It might sound backwards, but there’s a method to cutting down on remodeling (or just updating) madness. From a common-sense standpoint, fixtures are one of the highest traffic areas in your home. How important is a luxurious feel to your master bathroom faucet versus your kitchen faucet versus your utility sink faucet? Some folks would say they’re all equally important, while others are willing to splurge in select areas but not all rooms of their house.
If having a showstopping brushed gold faucet in your laundry room makes you feel great and pampered when doing housekeeping “chores,” go for it! If you’re a foodie who loves to cook with guests in the kitchen, maybe that’s where you splurge on a polished nickel beauty. If impressing guests is important, your guest bathroom or even a powder room can become a jewel of a showpiece in slate or rustic bronze. Only you can decide where the “feel” of a faucet matters most.
As for the second consideration of knowing your space, it’s equally individual: only you know how you’re going to decorate, and what items you’ll use to pull a room together. That “plain” white faucet that most people would call a design statement of the past, may be the perfect foil for all the pop art you plan to use in your private bathroom. A Tuscan bronze faucet in a sleek, modern kitchen? Maybe it’s just the thing to pair with the antique oriental runner you found in Budapest, the one that started your whole renovation to begin with.
Sometimes pieces or finishes that shouldn’t go together absolutely do when viewed in context of the entire room. If you have your mind set on incorporating a family heirloom, favorite art find or a hand-painted sink from Mexico, snap a few pics on your phone to carry with you as you shop. Choose the faucet finish that complements that element—and your lifestyle.
