“Bright Buoys” DIY Weekend Mini-Makover

On January 17th we asked our Facebook audience to help us choose a color palette for a low-cost weekend makeover. Our coastal-loving homeowner wanted to turn this drab family room into a cozy seaside den with a nautical feel.

The “Bright Buoys” design was selected by our fans and our Florida homeowner couldn’t have been more excited. “I was hoping to add some warmth, ‘pop’, and coziness to this dull room once my holiday decorations came down and I know this red and aqua are going to add the depth and texture I’m missing!”

Following a design consultation from our creative team to plan the space, the homeowner went to work on the DIY project over the weekend. First, an accent wall was painted with Benjamin Moore’s “Geranium” in a satin finish. A flea market end table was painted black add another tabletop surface and the coffee table’s top was painted cream to match other furnishings in the space.

Next, new linen curtains were hung and a bright-patterned aqua area rug (Wal-Mart) was placed. The homeowner chose a favorite light and airy McKnight print in a crisp white frame to anchor the accent wall (borrowed from another room). From the artwork, fabric was chosen for a variety of pillows and our DIYer went to work sewing. Silk palms were relocated from another area in the house to complete the larger elements in the room.

The final touch was all about making the space personal with new and old accessories. Sailboats, vintage ballast balls and a glittery iron mermaid were found at a local vintage shop. A few specialty pillows were purchased from HomeGoods and seashells, candles, and other nautical keepsakes from the family’s beachside travels completed the space.

Nautical accessories collected by the homeowner's family.

“I’m thrilled with the way the room turned out! The room feels warm, playful, eclectic, and inviting and reminds us of some of our favorite tropical vacations in the Caribbean. I was skeptical that I could complete the transformation on my own in a weekend (and on budget) but once the sewing was done for the pillowcases it went very quickly. There is a lot going on in the room but to us that makes it feel alive and lived in–we’re not the minimalist type. The kids now have ‘official’ spots for their sand collections and post cards and we look forward to piling up on the mounds of pillows during movie nights!”
